Welcome to the Japan Snow Monkeys Tour Guide
A guide to snow monkey tours in Japan — what to expect, how to do them, and a few tour/operator suggestions. Go here to find out how to get to the Nagano Snow Monkeys.
Some basic Nagano Snow Monkeys tours info
- Most tours run out of Nagano City, but there are others available if you’re in ski areas like Myoko Kogen, Nozawa Onsen, Shiga Kogen, and Hakuba, etc. There are tour operators that do snow monkey day-trips or private transfers, as per below, and these can be combined with other local attractions such as Zenkoji Temple and Togakushi.
- If you’re coming from Tokyo, you can take the Shinkansen (bullet train) to Nagano to meet the tours to the Japan Snow Monkeys (see below).
- When walking to the park – once you get to the parking/entrance area, there is a forested walk (30-40 minutes one way) on sometimes slippery, snowy paths. Be ready with waterproof shoes, warm layers, etc.
- Peak snow scenes are best December through February. Early March still good. Outside of those months, there may be little snow, and fewer monkeys will bathe in onsen.
- Morning or early day visits are often better as the snow monkeys sometimes bathe more in the morning and you’ll encounter fewer tourists.
